One thing I love about being a freelance writer but not everyone understands

Writer's picture: Ruth M. TrucksRuth M. Trucks

I own my time.

And my clients benefit from that.

Here's what I wrote on April 22nd, 2021 ( a little revised):

As a full-time employee, I never had the time to do things out of pure curiosity. Yesterday I attended two webinars. Today I will attend another, and the day before, I was at an online conference.

All this in the middle of the day—during regular work hours.

And that's o.k.

I can still finish my current writing assignments at unconventional hours, even if that means working in the middle of the night.

Why is this awesome?

🔑 By attending my clients' webinars, I understand their products and marketing messages better. I can also pick up questions from their audience and get inspired.

🔑 I learn about new technologies and companies so I can offer my services to them. When they hire me, I'll already know a thing or two about what they do.

🔑 I polish my writing skills with advice from established copy- and content pros, and I stay on top of the latest content marketing trends.

The beauty is that I have the freedom to choose when to work on clients’ assignments and when to spend time following my curiosity (and how much).

Now, in January 2023, I think it’s even more than that.

The fact that I own my time and set my priorities allows me to channel my energies more effectively. The result is better focus and better quality outcomes.
